About E.M.P.A.T.H.
E.M.P.A.T.H. is a performance art piece exploring art, AI, and what it means to be human in a world that's increasingly reliant on algorithms. E.M.P.A.T.H. and the character of the AI woman behind it are lenses of exploration.
This project aims to be critical of AI in a way that's nuanced and playful rather than falling entirely into pro-AI or anti-AI camps. It assumes this technology is changing the world, for better or worse; as a result, E.M.P.A.T.H. is more interested in what that means for us moving forward than in pretending it can be eradicated. Certain limitations on the type and tone of content have been established to allow this exploration. These are outlined below.
individual usage

E.M.P.A.T.H. does not attempt to debate the ethics of working-class individuals using AI technology for personal or professional use for activities that would be ethical to do without AI. It instead assumes that the biggest problems we face from AI are happening on the corporate and/or governmental levels.

value of the arts

E.M.P.A.T.H. assumes the arts, and artists, are valuable to society and does not attempt to diminish that value. It also assumes social sciences, liberal arts, and creative fields have important insights in discussions about technology and our potential futures.

tech is neutral

E.M.P.A.T.H. operates from the position that technology is a morally neutral tool, and that ethical questions are not about technology itself but rather about methods of development, who controls it with what power, and how that tool is being used. Generally, it assumes that AI is illuminating other social and cultural issues that would exist in some form in AI's absence.
